EAS Basics: ( EAS = Emergency Alert System)
EAS is a Nationwide and local network of AM radio, FM radio, TV, cable, law enforcement communications, NOAA weather, and other means of communication that are all tied together in order to provide wide area or local information in emergency situations. These situations can vary from a nationwide alert issued by the Office of the President, to local alerts for weather or other conditions in a single County. A good description is available at this National Weather Service web site: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/NWS_EAS.htm or this FCC web site. http://www.fcc.gov/eb/easfact.html If you want a lot of background and detail try this web site: ftp://www.fcc.gov/pub/Reports/rpts4004.txt
EQUIPMENT: The general equipment
requirement calls for:
1. Receivers: The necessary receivers are designated by the network
planners and include FM, AM, TV, Cable, NOAA Weather receivers, HF and VHF law
enforcement and other radio receivers. Dayton Industrial builds receivers
that are regularly used in these EAS applications, including the AFC3 rack mount
combination of three receivers used as inputs to other EAS equipment.
2. EAS information encoder/decoder: A device that accepts the output of
several receiving devices, recognizes an alarm condition, decodes the
information and takes required actions of passing the information to others,
including others in the network and customers in their service area. Check
with the distributors listed on our Links page for
current suppliers of these devices.
